Hackatonino (IUPAP-WG14)

Hackatonino @ IPAC2026

The main objective is to foster collaboration between students, industry professionals and Research Infrastructures (Ris) by addressing real-world challenges.

The proposed IUPAP Hackathonino is expected to take place during IPAC2026 (12-22 May, 2026 in Deauville France) and serve as a proof of concept for an annual event held at IPAC conferences. It builds on IPAC’s unique environment, which already brings together academia and industry, and promote co-creation and innovation around shared industrial and scientific challenges. Organized under IUPAP WG14, with support from AIPF, CERN, MIT, and others, it will be coordinated closely with the IPAC organizing team.

Around 30-50 students will form multidisciplinary teams to address societal challenges using accelerator-based concepts and tools. The initiative offers strong impact with modest investment, since students can work on their own laptops, with shared materials provided depending on industry support and needs identified during final preparation. A few mentors will guide the teams and contribute to the collaborative effort.

The Hackathon focuses on key accelerators-related themes including, but not limited to, Environment & Materials, Life Sciences and Energy Applications.

The event will highlight existing tools while enabling experimentation with industrial platforms such as ReqFlow , EnergyFlow(Cosylab), Hopsworks (TBC), or datasets from ESS, MAX IV, CERN or Kyma.

Ultimately, the Hackathon aims to strengthen the global ecosystem connecting academia, industry, and research infrastructures.
